Student Direct Stream (SDS)

Indian students applying to Canadian universities and colleges now have access to expedited visa processing through the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program, introduced by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada. In contrast to the typical visa processing duration, which may span 2-3 months, SDS offers Indian students the opportunity to acquire their visas in a swifter timeframe, typically within 4-6 weeks. Eligible applicants who apply through SDS often witness their applications processed within just 20 calendar days.

Replacing the previous Student Partnership Program (SPP), SDS comes with more rigorous criteria to meet. However, it proves highly advantageous for those who satisfy these conditions as it streamlines visa processing for SDS-eligible Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) and reduces the burden of financial documentation.

Eligibility Criteria for SDS

To qualify for a study permit through SDS, you must meet specific prerequisites, including:

1. Acceptance from a post-secondary Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
2. Payment of tuition fees for the first year of study.
3. A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD10,000.
4. A minimum IELTS score of 6 with no band less than 6, or an equivalent TEF (Test d’évaluation de français) score matching at least 7 in each skill (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).

If you meet these criteria, you will need to submit the following documents:

1. Letter of acceptance from a DLI.
2. Proof of tuition fee payment for the first year.
3. Proof of Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) payment (certificate/letter of attestation).
4. IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) or TEF scorecard.
5. Copy of your medical examination from an authorized panel of doctors.
6. Relevant academic background with complete academic documents.
7. Additional requirement of a Certificate of Acceptance to Quebec (CAQ) for students intending to study in Quebec.

All SDS applications must be submitted online.

Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

A DLI is a university, school, or college approved by a provincial or territorial government to admit international students. Public universities, colleges, and major private institutions in Canada are considered DLIs. When applying for a study permit, having a letter of acceptance from a DLI is mandatory. It’s important to note that only DLIs can enroll international students, and non-DLIs are not authorized to admit them.

Please be aware that being accepted by a DLI does not automatically grant eligibility for the post-study work permit.

Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)

A GIC is a Canadian investment with a guaranteed rate of return over a fixed period. As an Indian student planning to study in Canada, you’ll need to open a Canadian bank account online with one of the designated banks. The bank will hold your GIC in either a student or investment account, accessible only upon your arrival in Canada. The bank disburses the funds upon confirming your identity in the country. While you can receive an initial lump sum upon arrival, the remaining amount is distributed monthly or bi-monthly over 10-12 months.

It’s important that the bank providing your GIC gives you one of the following:

1. GIC certificate
2. Letter of attestation
3. Investment Balance confirmation
4. Investment Directions confirmation

The IRCC verifies each GIC, ensuring the prevention of any financial document-related fraud. SDS does not require any other financial documents to prove sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses to the IRCC.

Banks in India that offer GIC include:

1. ICICI
2. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)
3. SBI Canada
4. Scotiabank
5. HSBC Bank of Canada

Post-Graduation Work Permit

It’s important to determine your eligibility for post-graduation work after you complete your studies. Not all designated learning institutions make you eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program. Meeting specific criteria beyond graduation is essential.

Language Tests

For language proficiency, you may need to take one of these tests:

– IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
– CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)
– TEF (Test d’Évaluation du Français)

Intakes Available in Canada

Canada offers different intake periods:

– Fall: Popular among Indian students, Fall intake begins in September.
– Winter: Starting in January, it’s an option if you miss the September intake.
– Summer: Available for limited programs and colleges, the Summer intake usually commences in April or May.
